Earth Day 2019 - it's almost that time again! - NIKIN CH

Earth Day 2019 - soon it will be that time again!

On 22 April it is that time again. Earth Day takes place all over the world. People on all continents pause, take time to reflect on the well-being of our planet, participate in actions that call for more attention to urgent problems. NIKIN is also taking part!

This year, together with our partner, OneTreePlanted, and many volunteers, we will plant around 5000-8000 trees in the US state of Colorado! We are very excited to be part of it and to give something back to the earth. We will keep you up to date via social media!

 Earth Day 2019

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day emerged from a spontaneous student action, but quickly took off and was formalised at the 1969 Unesco conference in San Francisco. Half a century of attention to the beauty of our planet - and the threats it faces. Earth Day is formally recognised in 190 countries around the world. Cities and municipalities, voluntary organisations and private individuals want to encourage more sustainability.

What is Earth Day supposed to achieve?

Earth Day takes place every year on 22 April. The most important concern is to wake people up and, above all, to show the connections between the consumer behaviour of each individual and the overexploitation of nature. Earth Day is not just a celebration, it is a challenge!

What is actually done on Earth Day?

Earth Day is best known for extinguishing the lights for one hour all over the world. But Earth Day is much more. Every year there are special focuses and events organised by volunteers around the world. They draw attention to specific issues - this year the threat to species, from small insects like bees to large mammals like giraffes, which are portrayed in their uniqueness and irreplaceability.

Does it have an effect, the Earth Day?

Yes, absolutely. It raises awareness of the problem and its urgency. Thanks to Earth Day, more and more people are learning that even small actions and a little mindfulness can make a difference. Use less water. Don't use plastic where possible. Leave the car at home more often. Reconsidering one's own attitude towards consumption and its consequences. This is what Earth Day wants to achieve. Worldwide.

Who is doing something?

Countless volunteers around the world are actively involved in making every single Earth Day a memorable and thought-provoking one. Businesses are also getting involved. Our partner at NIKIN, One Tree Planted, gives volunteers the opportunity to spend a whole morning planting trees - in selected plantations in North and South America, but also in Antalya in Turkey.

Earth Day: Just join in!

But you don't have to shoulder a spade on Earth Day. Just about every one of us can do a dozen things in our immediate surroundings to help preserve the treasures of our Earth. That is why we ask you: Think about everything you pick up on Earth Day and ask yourself: what is the impact of this item? This food? This behaviour? And: what can I personally do just a little bit differently to reduce these impacts? You'll see - it's usually not a huge restriction. And every individual can help.
