Together with our community, we are committed to tree planting projects all over the world. And each of our projects is carefully selected, but the current one is a very special one: in December and January, we are supporting a project in Sete Lagoas in Minas Gerais, Carla's home town. She is part of the management team and has been with NIKIN since the very beginning. Understandably, our commitment and pride in this project are particularly high.
From the donation to the trees: this project is a success in two respects
This is not the first time that we have worked with the Terrenus organization, whose tree planting project we are supporting in December and January. A few months ago, we made a donation of CHF 80,000 at NIKIN . This donation was crucial in enabling the creation of a new NGO, which is now driving the project forward and can devote itself fully to reforestation. A success story even before the first Tree with NIKIN was planted in Sete Lagoas - and this is just the beginning.
Project location: Sete Lagoas in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Why is the Cerrado so important for our tree planting project?
The Cerrado in the municipality of Sete Lagoas is one of the most biodiverse biomes in the world, but unfortunately it is under enormous pressure. Deforestation, urbanization and intensive agriculture are not only endangering the unique landscape and local biodiversity, but also important water resources and the ability to store carbon. The Reforest-Cerrado project was launched to counteract this destruction. The restoration of destroyed areas and the promotion of biodiversity are carried out in two phases:
- Phase 1 begins in degraded areas of the Santa Helena APA in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais, with the planting of trees and their long-term maintenance.
- Phase 2 extends the reforestation to other locations in the Cerrado in order to achieve an even greater positive impact on the region.
30,000 seedlings are planted at the reforestation project.
And while reforestation projects always have clear ecological objectives, this project also aims to promote social and economic development in the area. In this way, the project creates jobs in the region and leaves a sustainable legacy for future generations. The objectives of the Cerrado project as a whole therefore encompass four key areas:
- Promoting biodiversity: Creating new habitats for numerous plant and animal species.
- Carbon sequestration: a contribution to climate change mitigation.
- Improve water quality: Protect the region's valuable water resources.
- Create jobs: Local communities are directly involved in the project.
NIKIN lends a hand and helps with reforestation on site
This project is a shining example of how local initiatives can tackle global problems. It shows how commitment and collaboration can have a direct positive impact on the environment and people. For Carla and Nicholas, this project is also very close to their hearts: firstly, it is taking place in Carla's home town, and secondly, Carla and Nicholas will be personally on site for this project to help plant 30,000 local seedlings. More impressions on site will of course follow - after all, we don't get to be so close to every one of our tree planting projects.
Carla and Nicholas are on site in December to help with the planting.
Together for a greener world
Our commitment to the environment goes beyond planting trees. We believe in the power of community and that together we can make the world a better place. Would you like to get involved too? For every NIKIN product you buy, we plant a Tree. Together we make the world greener - #treebytree!
