"Tree by Tree" is our promise and the way we make a difference with NIKIN . Together with One Tree Planted and our community, we are committed to various tree planting projects. In October, we are supporting the reforestation of a forest in Peru.
Peru is the third largest country in South America after Brazil and Argentina. Its nature is very varied and diverse - but highly endangered. With our current tree planting project, we are supporting the forest areas in the province of Puerto Inca. The project aims to restore the soil and the forest by planting them partly with long-lived crop layers and partly with native cocoa.
Our partner One Tree Planted will continuously document and evaluate the development and growth. Two months after planting, permanent monitoring plots (PPM) will be set up to monitor the survival of the plants and replace dead plants.
The reforestation will make it possible to restore 120 hectares of forest that had been cleared by shifting cultivation and livestock farming. There are around 500 tree species and 15 palm species in the primary forests of the area, including around 40 different valuable woods. In terms of wildlife, there are over 600 species of vertebrates in the area whose habitat is currently under threat.
Our tree planting project also benefits the community. By employing 2,600 workers throughout the duration of the project, from seedling production to planting in the final field, the community's economy is boosted. Capacities are strengthened through training workshops involving women and young people. In addition, cocoa farming provides a sustainable source of income from the third year onwards.
