The way we produce and consume has a massive impact on our environment. But what if we turned away from the linear economy and focused instead on a circular economy? That's exactly what the NIKIN Circular Collection aims to do: the TreeShirt Circular is designed to be fully recyclable once worn. This means that the shirt never produces waste and is instead biodegradable and compostable. Once you've worn the shirt out, you can simply send it back to us so we can break it down into its natural components through an industrial composting process. TreeShirt Circular Unisex

The TreeShirt Circular Unisex is the first NIKIN product that is 100% circular and thus makes an important contribution to sustainable development. It is made of biodegradable and compostable material and is free of toxic chemicals. The petrol-green hue gives the shirt a special touch and the regular cut makes it comfortable to wear. The white TreeEmbroidery and print on the front and back add that extra touch.

Through the take-back process, explained via a QR code on the shirtlable, the shirt can easily be returned to NIKIN so we can put it back into circulation. The TreeShirt Circular Unisex is Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Gold certified, setting new standards in sustainability.

TreeShirt Circular Women

The TreeShirt Circular Women is not only the first 100% circular product from NIKIN, but also completely toxin-free, biodegradable and compostable. The Petrol-Green colored shirt has a regular cut, similar to our Basic Shirt, and is decorated with a white TreeEmbroidery. The text on the front bottom right as well as on the back centered at the neck is applied as a print.

The TreeShirt Circular Women can easily be returned via the returns process to NIKIN so we can put it back into circulation. You can find instructions on the shirt label, which has a QR code. TheTreeShirt Circular Women is Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Gold and therefore not only sustainable, but also environmentally friendly produced.

Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Gold certified

This means that it was made using eco-friendly materials and that all chemicals involved in the manufacturing process are nature-friendly. So with the TreeShirt Circular, you're making sure you're wearing a cool, sustainable garment that meets the highest environmental standards.

Circular fashion revolution 

Maybe you've heard the term "circular" or "circular economy" before. And if you haven't - don't worry. Circular means making products so they can be reused or recycled after their useful life without harming the environment. This includes using sustainable, recycled or alternative materials, designing products to last longer, and implementing take-back and recycling programs to return garments after use to create a closed-loop system.

Our TreeShirt Circular is the perfect example of a 100% circular garment. It meets all three points of the circular economy and is made of textile fibers that can be reused at the end of their life.  

Biodegradable vs. compostable 

When a product is biodegradable, it means that it decomposes through the power of microorganisms or enzymes. This can take a while, depending on the material and the environment. Plastic, for example, takes a full 400 years to decompose - that's clearly too long.

Compostable, on the other hand, means that a product only biodegrades under controlled conditions. This is done by special microbes that are only found in certain environments, such as industrial composting facilities. So when a product is labeled "biodegradable," it does not automatically mean that it can also become compost. It can also just decompose into its natural components.

Our TreeShirt Circular is both biodegradable and compostable. This means that it not only decomposes quickly without harming the environment, but can also become valuable compost. So an old shirt becomes useful fertilizer for new trees!

OceanSafe and naNea, the material of the future 

We were able to achieve the big, circular goals we had with the TreeShirt Circular thanks to our collaboration with textile technology company OceanSafe. OceanSafe is at the heart of the core technology of biodegradable synthetic textile fibers and yarns that adhere to the Cradle to Cradle approach. Our TreeShirts Circular are 100% polyester, but they are 100% biodegradable polyester - called naNea. Compared to traditional polyester or cotton, naNea offers many benefits including less water use, less CO2 emissions, no release of harmful microplastics, full recyclability with no loss of quality, biodegradability and toxin-free.

OceanSafe requires brands like us to set up a take-back system when products reach the end of their useful life. In return, OceanSafe helps us gain access to industrial composting or fiber-to-fiber recycling facilities so we can close the loop and keep our products from ending up in a trash heap. 

Closing the loop - the TreeShirts Circular take-back process

We want to ensure that our TreeShirts Circular have a long life and can be returned to the cycle after use. That's why we have developed a simple take-back process for our customers. Here's how it works:

  • You want to return your worn out or broken TreeShirt? Great!
  • Just scan the QR code on the shirt label (or follow the link in our FAQs if you cut the label off).
  • Follow the instructions on the redemption landing page
  • You will be sent a prepaid shipping label so you can return the shirt to us.
  • The shirts are then forwarded to our partner for composting.
  • The industrial composting process produces valuable raw materials such as biogas, biomass, water and minerals.
  • The cycle is closed and the reused raw materials let new trees grow!

Please note: Shirts that are returned within the return period are excluded from this return process. This applies to shirts that are returned due to incorrect size or defects and are within the return period.
