Bamboo forest sustainable material

Bamboo - a sustainable alternative to wood and plastic

Bamboo as a versatile and sustainable alternative? The plant-based raw material is not only used in the production of our TreeSocks - it also brings many other great benefits.

The daily requirement of bamboo for a large panda is up to 40 kilogrammes. The plant, which belongs to the sweetgrass family, not only serves as a source of food for the fluffy bears, but also as an alternative to wood. Furniture, decoration and accessories, consumer products such as toothbrushes and hairbrushes, as well as parquet flooring and other products are now made from the woody stalks of this impressive plant.

Bamboo grows fast

The best feature of bamboo? Its rapid growth! "Fast" is almost an understatement here: the "Moso Bamboo" grows up to one metre per day! The popular sweet grass is found in tropical areas around the equator and differs in the height of its grasses; these range from a few centimetres to 40 metres. Bamboo used in this country is mostly harvested from plantations in China.

Diverse and sustainable: bamboo as a material

It's not just its super-fast growth that makes bamboo look sustainable. Take a look at the following factors that make this tropical plant stand out as a sustainable material and thus a suitable alternative to conventional wood.

  • Resistance. As bamboo is very robust, unlike coffee or bananas, for example, it can be cultivated without pesticides or artificial irrigation methods for the most part. This has less impact on the workers and the environment.
  • Flexibility. The wood of bamboo is hard and dense on the one hand and light and flexible on the other. Therefore, the plant is super suitable as durable furniture and building material.
  • Growth. Due to its rapid growth, bamboo stores a lot ofCO2. Unlike clearing, harvesting bamboo poses no risk of endangering its existence.
