A life without plastic – and the alternatives

Gepostet am 04 Juli 2019

It's hard to imagine our everyday life without plastic – we think! In fact, there are already some alternatives to conventional plastics. Learn more about them here.

Plasctic Waste

Plastic. It's everywhere. If we consciously pay attention to how often we use plastic every day, it quickly becomes clear that plastic is an indispensable part of our everyday lives. Plastic is comfortable. It is cheap. We NEED it – do we really need it? And what price do we pay for plastic consumption? Plastic destroys whole biotopes, destroys the lives of animals and plants and threatens our health. And: it lasts forever. Reason enough to think about plastic.

What exactly is plastic? How is it made?

Plastic is a by-product made from petroleum. This happens in several steps. When petroleum is processed, crude gasoline, gas, diesel, heating oils and gas oil are produced. Crude petroleum is split into components such as ethylene, propylene or butylene. These can be synthesized, for example by polymerase. Individual components are assembled to form long chains or nets – the basis for plastics. How the end product "plastic" is then used depends on the processing and possible additives.

Can you still live a decent life without plastic?

You hardly believe it, but you can. Of course it's soooo comfortable when plasctic plates and cutlery are thrown away after a children's birthday party. But when the children grow up, they will thank you for the environment we leave them. In many cases you just have to take a closer look and ask yourself: "Do I really need this? And that doesn't just apply to plastic, but to consumer goods in general.

Waste of plastic in epic quantities

While in Europe garbage is separated with passion, elsewhere plastic is wasted carelessly – for example in the United States, where plastic cutlery, crockery and mugs are commonplace in restaurants, but also in the home and supermarkets. And even plastic carrier bags are not stingy in the land of unlimited possibilities. No wonder, because in many places people do not believe in climate change – or at most where they already feel it...

Are there alternatives to plastic?

In fact, you can largely ban plastic from everyday life – you just have to take a close look. Plastic bags are expensive anyway and are gradually being replaced by fabric bags. You can also replace food and drinks that come in plastic bags. Even yoghurt or milk can be found in the refrigerated shelves of many supermarkets, partly in glass containers, which make reusable use possible.

Plastic dishes, which parents of small children consider a blessing, can also be replaced. For example, plates and cups made of bamboo – just as robust and often beautifully designed.

And where a lot of plastic is produced, namely in cosmetics and hygiene products, there are now numerous alternatives. Shower gels and shampoos can be replaced with natural soaps and skin creams can be bought in glass containers. And even hygiene articles especially for women – we know what is meant – are available either in recyclable or washable versions. Not a new idea, by the way, but better to handle than our parents still knew...

How can you reduce your plastic consumption?

Environmentalists point out that we need to reduce our plastic consumption much more than it is now. A corresponding legal initiative has already been prepared. But why should we wait for the legislator? Even now each individual can completely abolish at least a large part of his plastic consumption in daily life – we have given some suggestions.

Tips and tricks for dealing with plastics

It can't be done entirely without plastic. Even specialist authors and bloggers know that. The laptop and the mobile phone, but also children's toys like Lego cannot be completely replaced. What can you do? Avoid plastic as much as possible when shopping and especially when buying food and cosmetics. Use packaging-free shops for shopping. Take a closer look at purchases. For example, electronic devices can be used more sustainably – for example by not constantly replacing them with the latest model and recycling them professionally when they really need to be disposed of.

We help you to do with less plastic in your everyday life

Every day millions of disposable PET bottles made of plastic are consumed and unfortunately often not properly disposed of. As a result, tons of plastic end up in the oceans and threaten them massively. An absurd phenomenon. We offer you the perfect alternative: our TreeBottle, which is made of solid materials and can therefore be used again and again – it also keeps the contents cool for up to 24 hours and warm for up to 12 hours! So get a reusable  TreeBottle and reduce your personal plastic consumption.
